The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 17, 2022, is the 27th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy. Observed each year on the third Monday in January as “a day on, not a day off,” MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
Today, our club members are completing at-home kits to create comfort bags for children in foster care. The bags will include positive and uplifting messages to comfort children during times of transition from one home to the next.
Did you know? On any given day, there are approximately 437,500 children in foster care in the United States. Most of them are removed from their homes with little more than the clothes on their backs. If they do have any personal belongings, they are given a trash bag in which to carry them.
